SciSys, the Chippenham-based specialist IT firm, has landed a £2m contract to supply groundbreaking radio technology to a major UK radio broadcaster.

SciSys’ dira! system incorporates next-generation technology to enable ‘cloud-hosted’ local radio production and infrastructure.

It includes virtualised studios which only require the bare minimum of equipment installed locally to produce and broadcast. The broader services are accessed over the wide-area network and the software and data stored and maintained in centralised datacentres.

The broadcaster, which has not been named, has signed a three-year contract with SciSys for the system.

Last year the BBC awarded SciSys a three to four year contract worth up to £6m to supply dira! for use by BBC Radio, paving the way for an integrated audio production system across BBC national, regional and local radio networks.

SciSys CEO Klaus Heidrich said: “For SciSys and its Media & Broadcast division, this is another major project under the recently renewed framework contract.

“I am extremely pleased by the level of commitment that our customer shows, as it migrates its entire local radio systems to SciSys’ innovative virtualised dira! product.”

SciSys’ media & broadcast division accounts for about 20% of annual revenues at the group, which employs 450 staff across its offices in Chippenham, Bristol, Leicester and Reading and two in Germany.

SciSys also operates in the space, defence, environment and government sectors for clients spanning the European Space Agency, the BBC, Airbus and the Ministry of Defence.
