Development of Bath’s Quays South, which will form a major part of the city’s planned Innovation Quay scheme, has moved a step closer following talks between defence group BMT and Bath and North East Somerset Council.

They have reached an outline agreement on how the two parties can work together to redevelop the area of the city which is currently unoccupied and derelict.

The scheme, which has still to undergo detailed design and receive planning approval, would provide accommodation for all three of BMT’s Bath-based subsidiaries as part of a wider development including business, residential units and creative space, recognising the importance of the site’s industrial legacy, in line with the council's masterplan.

Subject to satisfactory completion of the agreement, BMT will now start preliminary discussions with developers in order to ascertain how the project can best be delivered to the benefit of all parties.

BMT regional director for UK and Europe Gary Smith said: “BMT’s current office space in Bath doesn’t allow for future expansion, nor does it allow all three BMT companies to be housed in the same complex as would be ideal. In order for BMT’s presence in the South West to grow at an appropriate rate to support its key clients, new, larger office accommodation must be secured.

“We’re very aware of the historical significance of the Bath Quays South site and will work with the council to ensure that any redevelopment is sympathetic to Bath’s unique architectural heritage.”

Bath & North East Somerset Council leader Cllr Paul Crossley added: “This agreement is part of the Bath City Enterprise Area and Bath Quays South gaining momentum as a beautifully inventive location for hi-tech, innovative companies that are a core part of this area’s future.

“BMT is a highly respected, major employer and securing this agreement with them is an endorsement of the Council’s plans to make this city a place where businesses can thrive and grow. It sends a clear message to other companies and investors that we are positive about working with them to explore what opportunities there are to realise their business ambitions.”
