Bath-based specialist property developer Longacre has been given the green light to refurbish Grade I listed Fitzroy House on Great Pulteney Street and reinstate many of its historic characteristics.

Longacre is converting the five Georgian townhouses making up the building into 28 private apartments. Dating from around 1800, the property was a hotel before it became sheltered housing in the 1970s.

Anchor Housing Association sold Fitzroy House to Longacre last July.

The company has been given permission to remove modern alterations such as suspended ceilings, doors, internal partitions and corridors and restore or replace original features including stone floors, front doors, steps to the basement and decorative cornicing.

Longacre director Mark Tyrrell said the high-quality refurbishment will enhance the frontage and make the building more in keeping with its iconic surroundings.

“We feel it is important to give Bath’s historic buildings the care and attention they deserve in order to breathe new life into them and preserve them for future generations,” he said.

Longacre has extensive experience in converting Bath’s listed buildings. Last year it unveiled its conversion of a redundant Grade I listed building in the city centre at 1 Bilbury Lane. The project created six luxury apartments and a bespoke penthouse apartment.

Other schemes have included the renovation of a Grade II listed property, which created 19 flats, and the reconfiguration of vacant council-owned terraced properties, to create a collection of high-quality apartments.
