Bath Ales draws on Danish tradition to bring Christmas beer to market

Bath Ales has launched a limited-edition yuletide beer at the city’s Christmas Market – taking its inspiration from Denmark’s traditional festive brew celebrations.

The brewery gave away 200 bottles of Sulis at its pop-up lodge in the market. The 5.6% ABV beer, made at its brewery in Warmley between Bath and Bristol, is described as a warming Bock-style lager with hints of biscuit, flapjack and honey.

Bath Ales senior brewer Darren James said the brewery wanted to hold its own version of the J-Day celebrations in Denmark, when beer company Tuborg stages a high-profile launch of its festive beer – an event which Danes have taken to their hearts.

He said: “In Denmark the annual festive brew is launched with much anticipation and celebration. We’ve put our own Bath twist on our version, which is inspired by Aqua Sulis, the old Roman name of the city.”

“We hope to make Sulis Christmas an annual brew and an annual celebration event.”

Sulis is available in 330ml bottles from the Christmas Market Lodge and Bath Ales’ stand at the market for £3 per bottle. It will also be available at selected pubs and restaurants across Bath, Bath Ales’ online shop and at its brewery shop in Warmley.

Bath Ales’ Christmas Market lodge is operated with the team behind Framptons bar and restaurant in Grand Parade.

As well as a bar stocked with Bath Ales’ award-winning ales, it is also selling mulled wine and cider and food.

Bath Ales, which was founded in 1995 and is best known for its flagship Gem bitter, was acquired by Cornish brewery St Austell last year. It also operates a pub estate across Bristol, Bath and Cirencester.
