Former DHL International managing director David Coles has joined the board of Bath Building Society as a non-executive director.

Mr Coles, a long-time Bath resident, brings a wealth of experience at a senior level in marketing, retailing and consumer goods to an already diverse management board.

Mr Coles’ career took him from the marketing department at United Biscuits and Allied Bakeries to marketing director at supermarket group Safeway and its rival, Bristol-based Somerfield, where he was commercial director during the 1990s.

In 1998 he became managing director of international parcels group DHL and in 2003 took over as managing director at Unichem, the giant wholesale pharmacy business.  More recently he has been leading a healthcare consulting business.

Bath Building Society chief executive Dick Jenkins said: “It is a tremendous coup for us to have someone of David’s calibre joining our board.

“David has a wealth of senior-level business experience and I have no doubt that he will make a significant contribution to the next chapter of the Society’s development. As a Bath resident, like us he is especially passionate about the local community and I am sure we will benefit from his expertise and counsel.”

Mr Coles adds: “Bath Building Society is an outstanding example of a successful Bath-based business and I am excited to be involved in the company’s continuous development and to playing a part in its continued success. The society is dedicated to providing a special and personal service and being close to their customers; its commitment to the local community is especially close to my heart.”
