A senior associate with Bath-based international landscape architecture practice Grant Associates has joined the panel of Design West, the organisation that brings together the best expertise from across the region’s built and natural environment sectors.

Andrew Haines, pictured, is a highly accomplished landscape architect and Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute, who has served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Bath.

With 30 years’ experience in private and public sectors, working on a diverse range of projects, he excels at managing multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex landscape projects, ranging from urban regeneration to sensitive heritage environments.

Having spent the past two decades spent at Grant Associates – which addresses the global challenges of urbanisation, the climate crisis and biodiversity extinction in its projects – he also has a keen interest in creative ecological and sustainable design as well as strong design, technical and communication skills.

Andres said he was delighted to be appointed as a panel member with Design West.

“I look forward to sharing my passion for landscape design and placemaking and working collaboratively with the development sector and decision-makers to drive forward design excellence in the development process,” he added.

“It will be my privilege to work closely with my fellow professionals to offer my experience as a critical friend.”

Design West, which is independent and not for profit, works collaboratively with the development sector and decision-makers to shape better places by providing design review, policy support, consultation and training across the South West.

Its panel of experts encompasses a wide spectrum of the design profession, from climate and ecology to housing, heritage, people & place and inclusivity.

Design West Head of Design Pippa Goldfinger said: “We have a critical role to play across the South West in addressing the big challenges of today – from the climate crisis, to sustainable development, economic growth and the development of healthy, inclusive cities and neighbourhoods.

“With landscape, biodiversity and nature ever-more important in the design of the  places we live, we are delighted to welcome Andrew to our design review panel.

“An internationally renowned practitioner, Andrew’s appointment will ensure that local developments, councils and ultimately local people benefit from his knowledge and skills.”

Grant Associates, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, is best known as the lead designer of the iconic Gardens by the Bay attraction in Singapore, and also oversaw the Superbloom transformation of the Tower of London moat during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

It employs more than 70 people from nearly 20 countries across its design studios in Bath and Singapore – the majority are landscape architects who work with architects, 3D-modellers, BIM and visualisation specialists, horticulturists, designers, IT and other technicians.
