Bath’s geek girl power attracts top tech writer to networking breakfast

Entrepreneur, tech writer and TV reporter Kate Russell is guest of honour at an event next month staged by Bath’s innovative networking group for female tech workers.

Bath Girl Geeks Dinners was set up eight years ago to give women the chance to meet informally for tech talk in a female-friendly environment.

Founder Sarah Lamb launched the group after getting frustrated as one of the only females attending technical events and being asked to justify why she was there by her male counterparts.

Wishing to be treated the same as any other geek, she decided Bath women needed their own events – although male geeks are welcome.

She said: “After all to be geeky is to be intelligent, have passion for a subject and to know that subject in depth. It’s not at all about being better than others, or about gender, race, religion or anything else. Those things just detract from the real fun stuff, the technology, the innovation and the spread of new ideas.”

Kate Russell, pictured, who has been writing about technology, gaming and the internet since 1995, joins the group for a breakfast networking event on Saturday November 23.

Kate is a regular expert on TV programmes including ITV’s Daybreak and radio stations and writes columns for National Geographic Traveller magazine and Web User magazine. Her book Working the Cloud and companion website workingthecloud.biz is the ultimate collection of online tips, tricks and resources for small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs who want to get ahead online.

The breakfast networking event is at the University of Bath Innovation Centre between 9.30am and 11am. Anyone interested in attending should register via bathgirlgeek@gmail.com
