Anthropologie, the upmarket American homeware and fashion retailer, has confirmed it is to open its Bath store at the end of May – its fifth British outlet and first outside the capital.

It will move into the former Habitat store on New Bond Street following a reported £2m refurbishment of the 8,700 sq ft building.

Its arrival is seen as a significant boost to Bath’s burgeoning reputation as a premium shopping location capable of competing against much larger UK cities and attracting top-name as well as independent retailers, particularly in high-end fashion.

The firm, which launched its first store in Pennsylvania 20 years ago and now has 180 across the US and Europe, said: “Bath is a city that stands for everything Anthropologie values; authenticity, creativity, beauty, flair and independent thinking.

“The new Anthropologie location in Bath will offer customers of exclusively sourced merchandise.

“As with all Anthropologie stores, our new addition in Bath has been carefully crafted to seamlessly fit in with this historic city’s rich heritage.”

The retailer said the overall design for the store respects the existing building’s character and is enhanced by additional elements. “We feel sure that it will become a destination in this much loved city in its own right,” it added.

Products selected by its buyers will include exclusive items from local artists and designers. The store will open on May 30.
