Talk: Engineering teamwork for the built environment through good design

Good design in the built environment is the theme of a Creative Bath talk presented by Gavin Thompson, head of strategic development at Bath-based design engineers Buro Happold.

Titled Design Matters – Integrated Visions, the talk will use the stories behind projects which range from small sculptural installations through to the 2012 Olympics. The event takes place at the Slug & Lettuce, 5-6 Edgar Buildings, George Street, on April 15 from 9am-10am. Tickets are £5.

Gavin will explore how balance can be achieved in practice. The session will appeal to any designers engaged in projects which rely on teamwork among a range of specialists. Anyone working with creative partners can learn much from this.
Really good design in the built environment is tough. It flows from the delicate balance of client, architect, engineer and contractor working closely together to achieve a greater outcome than any could do on their own. Different people, different disciplines, different academic specialism’s, even different understanding of legal issues: the key is careful collaboration.
Gavin is a chartered engineer and during his 25 years with international engineering consultancy Buro Happold his interests have extended right across the built environment living and working in many countries. A true passion for design in its broadest sense flows through Gavin's work, coupled with a deep technical interest in the nuts and bolts and analysis and design. He is currently pioneering the development of rapid optioneering techniques for low emission building and community design.

Also at the event Wendy Matthews from the Bath Fringe Festival will update on the festival in May.
The session is sponsored by Bath-based HiQo Solutions, the cutting-edge software development services provider. HiQo is in the business of helping solve real world problems through efficient, effective systems and applications.
