The health and social care sector team at Bath-headquartered law firm Royds Withy King has advised on the acquisition of a Bristol care home despite the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the sector.

Lawyers in the team worked with specialist mortgage broker Chandler & Co for several months on the deal to buy the The Gables Residential Care Home in Hanham, pictured, on behalf of care home operater Paul and Jacky Edwards, who own and operate the Compton View Residential Home in Yeovil.

Completion took place earlier this month.

The Gables is a 20-bed residential home which has been operated by retiring seller David Cooke for a number of years. It was rated Good in its last inspection.

Royds Withy King and Kent-based Chandler & Co are members of Buyacarehome, a one-stop shop for businesses wishing to purchase a care home.

Regional chartered accountancy firm Albert Goodman, which has seven offices across the West of England, provided financial and tax advice on the acquisition.

Royds Withy King health and social care team partner Hazel Phillips, pictured, said: “Despite the current Covid-19 challenges we are delighted that the acquisition continued after months of work by all parties.

“Our clients are experienced care home operators and the need for good quality care is greater than ever in the backdrop of Covid-19. I look forward to seeing Paul make a huge success of this home.”

Paul Edwards admitted it was a challenging time to take over a care home, but added: “Given our success with Compton View and the amazing teams we have we are confident that The Gables and its residents will flourish under our care.”

The deal was the second funded by Chandler & Co for the couple. Senior broker Jonathon Read said: “They continue to provide great quality of care and it’s amazing to see acknowledgement of the quality of boutique assets.

“I have no doubts that working with specialist solicitors and accountants made the difference between completing or not in the current challenging climate.”

Albert Goodman has also previously worked with the Edwards. Head of tax at Tracey Watts said: “I am pleased to see the confidence Paul and Jacky have shown in the marketplace in making this acquisition – I’m sure they will make a huge success of this, as they have with their other home.”

Royds Withy King provides a comprehensive range of legal services from corporate and commercial to family and private client and advises in a number of key sectors from its Bath headquarters and offices along the M4 from Bristol to London.
