Carluccio’s to turn up the heat in Bath’s competitive restaurant market

Italian restaurant chain Carluccio’s is to open an outlet in Bath – the latest in a wave of nationally-owned eating-out venues to set up in the city.

The restaurant, in Milsom Place, promises “genuine homemade Italian food in relaxed surroundings”. It will be close to Jamie’s Italian, which opened recently in the upmarket shopping complex. National French restaurant chain Cote also has a branch in Milsom Place opposite Carluccio's new site. In May Raymond Blanc opened a branch of his Brasserie Blanc chain next to the refurbished Francis Hotel in Queen Square.

At one time known for its independent restaurants, Bath is now home to most of the national chains of eateries – from fast-food and pizza outlets to more specialist restaurants launched by celebrity chefs.

Carluccio’s opened its first restaurant in London in 1991 and today has more than 60 outlets, including two in Bristol.

The Bath restaurant, which opens on September 10, will create around 40 jobs. As well as an all-day restaurant it will house a food shop and deli.
