Magners fruit and orcharding manager Bob Chaplin, who has worked in cider production for 40 years, has won a national award for his outstanding contribution to the industry.

Bob, based at Magners GB’s Shepton Mallet cider mill, collected the Fred Beech Trophy in recognition of his support of the South West of England Cider Association (SWECA) and his ‘tireless’ dedication and efforts in the orchard and cider section of the annual Royal Bath & West Show.

The trophy is given to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry each year. It was presented to Bob by The National Association of Cider Makers (NACM).

Bob’s first job four decades ago was as a laboratory technician with a salary of £850 a year.  Over the years he has established and fostered links between growers and producers and has become a much-valued source of advice for newcomers and existing cider makers alike.

Every year he joins a team of volunteers to put together an exceptional celebration of orchards and cider at the Royal Bath & West which has become a showpiece for the industry and boasts the largest cider competition in the world.

Bob is known for his cool manner under pressure and his tenacity and good humour are true strengths.

Receiving his award from NACM chair Paul Bartlett, Bob said: “I am honoured and delighted to be this year’s Fred Beech Trophy award winner. It’s fantastic to be awarded for the work that you do and even more rewarding to have a career that you enjoy. This award will take pride of place in my office.”

Mr Bartlett said: “The award is well-deserved. We are grateful for all that Bob does, and continues to do, for the cider industry. Long may it continue.”

The award was created in memory of Fred Beech, who was a leading pomologist at the former Long Ashton Research Centre in Bristol.

Bob was presented with his award at the NACM executive meeting in London, prior to the All Party Parliamentary Cider Reception at the House of Commons.
