Council launches litter clampdown on Bath city centre businesses

Action has been taken against dozens of businesses in Bath city centre in a crackdown on firms that ignore trade waste rules.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has pledged to tackle firms flouting the rules in bid to reduce street litter in the city centre.

Thirty-six businesses have been given final warnings, four legal notices have been served for those that ignored the final warning, and four fixed-penalty notices of £100 were served for breaches of legislation.

Council officers are preparing to prosecute two businesses following a series of dawn inspections in April to ensure trade waste is put out at agreed times.

Cabinet member for neighbourhoods Cllr David Dixon said, “Feedback from residents and visitors is very clear – they want to see clean streets. A business putting out their trade waste at the wrong time undermines the community’s efforts to achieve this. Litter and food lying around become instant targets for animals such as gulls scavenging for food or people looking to cause mischief, and the torn open bags have to be cleaned up by our cleansing operatives.

“The council has been really clear to businesses about the expectations of the community. Ignoring us will result in being hit in the pocket or taken to court. The message is simple – put your trade waste out at the agreed times.”
