Bath Rotary and University of Bath RAG have donated £10,000 to the city’s Peggy Dodd Centre to pay towards a lift that will double the number of Alzheimer’s carers it can support.

The money was raised from a firework display at The Rec last month – a joint venture for the second year running between the Rotary and students from the University’s RAG. The headline sponsor was the Bath Building Society.

A total of £17,500 was raised for charity from the sale of tickets to the event as well as contributions on the night from those who attended.

The £10,000 donation to the Peggy Dodd Centre in Combe Down will help with its appeal for funding to install a lift.

The centre’s company secretary David Hughesdon said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this kick-start to our appeal. The installation of a lift will be an amazing help as it will allow the current work at the centre to be extended to the first floor and so double the number of carers in the area that we can support.”

Rotary Club fireworks committee chairman Alan Keeling said: “We are very pleased with the continued popularity of the fireworks display and the wonderful amount that has been raised for this most deserving local cause. As ever, we are very grateful to the generous Bathonians that contribute on the night to help kick-start this very worthwhile appeal.”

Sally Williamson and Matt Hammond, student event managers from RAG at the University of Bath Students’ Union, added: “This is the second successful year that we have combined with the Rotary in helping to organise the firework display and we are once again proud of our students who come and support on the evening and donate to this worthy cause.”

Bath Building Society chief executive Dick Jenkins said: “A huge thanks to all those who attended the display and so generously donated back in November.  This is a fantastic amount of money to have raised and it is wonderful to be able to support such a worthwhile local charity.”

The Rec has been provisionally booked for Saturday November 2 next year in anticipation of another successful event.
