Bath’s reputation as a magnet for global film and TV production has been strengthened by it becoming the setting for an American drama-documentary on the life of composer George Frideric Handel.

Kent-based Two Productions, commissioned by US firm Groberg Films, worked closely with Bath Film Office, part of Bath and North East Somerset Council, to shoot scenes in the city for Handel the Man and His Legacy (the production’s working title).

It follows the successful screening last month of German contemporary TV drama Unknown Heart which was also filmed extensively in the area.

Handel the Man and His Legacy tells the story of the composer and of those of his contemporaries such as librettist Charles Jennens, sopranos Susannah Cibber and Francesca Cuzzoni, who inspired the man and shaped his music.

Steve Bache, from Two Productions, said he considered Bath to have some of the UK’s best locations.

“The wonderful city of Bath provides a rich backdrop for the re-enactments,” he said. “We couldn’t ask for better locations, and the Bath Film Office has been most helpful in enabling this all to happen.”

Scenes were shot outside the Assembly Rooms (featuring a horse and carriage), in Miles Buildings and also in Boatstall Lane – the alley at the back of The Guildhall.

Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development Cllr Ben Stevens said: “This filming demonstrates what a magnet the city is to film makers from all around the world. The filming of TV dramas contributes considerable investment into the local economy so we are very happy to support productions like this.

“Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Film Office works closely with production companies to source filming locations in the area and assist with the smooth running of shoots for the benefit of crews, residents and visitors.”
