Horse artist is riding high on celebrity endorsement

Bath-based equine artist Stuart James Knowles, who has sold his paintings to celebrities including Madonna and Guy Ritchie, returns to his home city later this month with an exhibition at the Walcot Chapel Gallery.

Stuart’s oil paintings of horses are proving more popular than ever – a fact he puts down to the success of Steven Spielberg’s recent War Horse blockbuster.

After an exhibition at New York’s prestigious Number 35 Gallery in April last year he is now arranging an exhibition in Paris this year.

In the meantime Stuart, who says he has developed a following among A-list celebrities, is bringing his work to Bath for a two-week exhibition at the Walcot Chapel Gallery, off Walcot Street, with prolific Russian realist portrait artist Mariam Danishvar Brown.

Stuart said  “I have to be very discreet with some of my famous clients as they prefer not to be named. However I am extremely proud to say that a large horse oil painting called Monty hangs in the LA home of William Shatner (Star Trek’s Captain Kirk).”

Stuart, who currently has a waiting list for his work, is influenced and inspired by George Stubbs, the 18th century painter famous for his horse paintings, and Susan Rothenberg, a contemporary painter in New Mexico. He has also been supported Susan Crawford, one of the world’s leading equine artists.

As well as oils he also works in charcoal and water colours and has recently starting working on portraits and landscapes.

The Walcot Chapel show starts on June 26.
