Bath’s newest exhibition space, Roseberry Road Studios, is to host a major retrospective next month of one of the UK’s foremost video artists.
A winner of major international awards, Terry Flaxton, pictured, has been a leading light in British video art for almost two decades and has assembled an impressive body of work combining highly personal, poetic video art with powerful, polemical documentary.
Somerset-based Terry has worked as cinematographer to numerous celebrities including Madonna, Van Morrison, Grace Jones and Queen Latifa, and has won writing and directing commissions from the BBC, Channel 4 and South West Screen.
A former Professor of Cinematography at UWE Bristol, and now director of the Centre for Moving Image Research at the university, his work has been exhibited all over the world, with five runs at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York, each of which attracted more than 1.2m visitors.
The Roseberry Road Studios retrospective is structured as a journey upwards through several floors of the exhibition and events space, which opened in May.
It will also chart Terry’s development from making his first film in 1971, via analogue video in 1976 to his becoming aware of the idea of high-definition analogue video in 1989.
During the six-week run, Terry, a lifetime Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, will also be premiering a major new work Mexico: Landscapes of the Art.

The exhibition, which features 52 works created between 1977 and 2023, will then be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 7 October and 29 October, from 11am until 5pm.
