National logistics group Wincanton has appointed Tom Hinton as its new chief financial officer (CFO).

Mr Hinton, pictured, joins the Chippenham-headquartered group on 15 August after nearly two years as CFO at London-based international mining and chemicals business WE Soda.

He has also worked in CFO roles for Infinis Energy and Domestic & General and for British Gas-owner Centrica in Canada.

His appointment follows an extensive search process undertaken by the Wincanton board’s nomination committee, supported by an external search firm.

The CFO role at Wincanton, Britain’s largest third-party logistics group employing around 19,600 workers, including 5,500 drivers, has been filled on an interim basis since 1 March by director James Clarke.

Tom Hinton said: “I very much look forward to joining Wincanton and becoming part of the executive management team.

“Wincanton’s strong operational performance, blue-chip customer base and considerable growth potential make this an exciting opportunity.”

In May, Wincanton, operates more than 200 sites across the country and has around 3,500 vehicles on the road, reported a 16.3% increase in annual revenue to £1.42bn, triggering a rise in underlying pre-profits of 23% to £58.1m.

Much of that growth has come from its investment in eCommerce fulfilment, including its £23.9m acquisition of specialist logistics firm Cygnia last September.

Wincanton chairman Dr Martin Read CBE said: “We are delighted to appoint someone of Tom’s calibre to the board. He has a strong financial and commercial track record and will be a great asset to the company.”

Wincanton chief executive officer James Wroath said he was pleased to welcome Tom to his new role as the board led Wincanton through the next stage of its development.

“He has broad experience and an engaging and innovative style that I believe complements Wincantons strategic direction,” he added.
