Chippenham-based supply chain and logistics firm Wincanton is looking to accelerate its growth after appointing Martin Palmer as commercial director.

Mr Palmer, pictured, joins from rival Norbert Dentressangle where he was business development director for four-and-a-half years. Prior to that he was a business unit director at TDG and has also held senior business development roles at Amethyst and Bibby Distribution.

In his new role at Wincanton he will lead its business development and marketing team and take responsibility for increasing the group’s growth.

Pre-tax profits at the group, which employs 15,500 people across 200-plus sites in the UK, climbed by more than a fifth to £25.6m in the year to the end of March.

Wincanton chief executive Eric Born said: “I am delighted to welcome Martin to Wincanton. His proven track record, coupled with his in depth-knowledge of our sector, makes him the perfect fit to drive Wincanton’s future growth.”

Mr Palmer added: “As a genuine British success story, Wincanton has an unparalleled reputation for consistently delivering operational excellence and adding value to its customers’ operations, and I am delighted to be a part of this organisation. I am also very excited about working across such a broad range of sectors, from multichannel through to manufacturing and construction.

“I am relishing the task of harnessing the commitment and motivation within the organisation to drive the next phase of Wincanton's development.”
