New opening planned by Bath Pub Co as it calls time on The Chequers

The Bath Pub Company, which owns three outlets in the city, is planning to open a new site this spring.

The move follows the ending on Monday of its lease on The Chequers on Rivers Street. The firm has turned down the offer from owner Ei Publican Partnerships of a new lease at the award-winning pub, pictured, after running it for 10 years.

During that time it won a Bath Life Award, Bath Good Food Awards, Trencherman’s Awards and receiving a glowing review from Giles Coran in The Times.

Bath Pub Company managing director Joe Cussens said 2019 was its best year ever for customer satisfaction at The Chequers, so it was great to be going out on a high.

“Our lease is up for renewal and following a review of the business, we concluded that the size and location of The Chequers site doesn’t fit with our plans for future growth of the company,” he said.

“So after 10 great years there, we’ve taken the decision to cease trading at The Chequers.”

He said the sadness of losing what he described as a “much-loved site” was being offset by the excitement at the prospect of opening a new site.

“Plans for this are at an advanced stage and we hope to make a formal announcement in the near future,” he added.

“I’d like to thank all our customers for their support over the years – and of course, all the wonderful, talented people who have worked with us here. It’ll be sad to say goodbye to The Chequers.”

The Bath Pub Company, which was launched in 2012, operates The Marlborough Tavern, The Hare & Hounds and The Locksbrook Inn. Ei Publican Partnerships operates a portfolio of more than 4,000 pubs including the Royal Oak in Summerhays Place, Bath.
