New student housing complex will free up rented space for Bath families

The redevelopment of Bath’s historic Twerton Mill has been completed, creating a state-of-the-art student housing complex for the city’s burgeoning student population.

The £16.6m project has 330 bedrooms in a mixture of studios, en-suite clusters and townhouses for students, which will free up scarce privately rented accommodation in Bath for families.

Work began on the former landmark building on Lower Bristol Road in May last year with Bristol-based Midas Construction working closely with developers McLaren Property, architects Stride Treglown and Bath and North East Somerset Council to ensure the development fully reflected the historic importance of the site.

Twerton Mill was originally home to a cloth manufacturing company called Wilkin’s, which dominated the area in the 19th century and made military uniforms during World War One. However the mill buildings had been derelict for many years.

The old mill wall and the famous mill buildings gates have been retained while the new-build elements of the project were carefully created to a contemporary design which employed traditional materials to retain the heritage of the location.

Those behind the scheme hope it will help meet the shortfall of student accommodation in the Bath area, with almost 10,000 rooms having to be privately rented in the city for the student population, taking up properties which could be used for local families.

Midas Construction operational director Jamie Harwood said: “This new student housing complex is on a main commuter route and an important gateway site for students from both Bath Spa University and the University of Bath, and the high standard of the development and build offers an enviably modern accommodation option for students.

“The contemporary design employed in the build also manages to pay homage to the rich industrial heritage of the site, with many traditional materials used in the construction of the new buildings.”

Midas has won a number of student accommodation contracts recently and is developing sites in Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff.

Midas Group chief executive Alan Hope added: “Securing these contracts highlights the hard work, dedication and skill of our workforce in delivering modern student accommodation across the region. Midas continues to secure prime new contracts as we develop and grow stronger as a business year on year, and I am looking forward to the future and our continued success.

“As part of our vision as a growing company we also maintain a commitment to the communities we serve, and with every development we are not only creating a new building but forming long-lasting partnerships with local neighbourhoods, suppliers and sub-contractors which boosts employment in the region and supports vital community projects.”
