University of Bath Professor of Aerospace Engineering Ismet Gursul has been made a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), recognising him as one the most respected names in the global aerospace industry.

The AIAA, the world’s largest aerospace technical society, cited Prof Gursul for his outstanding technical contributions in vortex-dominated flows and unsteady aerodynamics, and for sustained editorial contributions to the science of aeronautics.

He is among 28 new Fellows announced this month by the AIAA as world leaders in aerospace engineering, science and research.

He will be inducted at a ceremony in May in Arlington, Virginia. This will be followed the day after by the AIAA Awards Gala at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC when the new Fellows will be celebrated.

Prof Gursul, pictured, is also a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Associate Editor of both the AIAA Journal and the Aeronautical Journal. He joined the University of Bath as a Reader of Aerospace Engineering in 1999.

He said: “I am proud to be elected as an AIAA Fellow. This is the highest award in aerospace science and engineering community.”

AIAA president Laura McGill added: “The Class of 2023 AIAA Honorary Fellows and Fellows are among the best minds in the aerospace profession. I commend each member of this year’s class for their many accomplishments.

“These distinguished individuals have earned the respect and gratitude of our broad science and engineering community. We are in awe of their creativity and exceptional contributions to advance the performance and capability of aerospace systems.”
