Bath-based planning and design practice Nash Partnership has landed another award for its major urban regeneration project in Cheltenham.

Hot on the heels of it winning a national Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Award, the St Pauls scheme scooped another RTPI accolade – this time for the South West region.

The scheme, a consultation-led masterplan for Cheltenham Borough Homes, was named the ‘overall winner’ from eight projects submitted for this year’s RTPI South West regional awards.

The project brought together Cheltenham Borough Homes, Cheltenham Borough Council, residents, police, other stakeholders and Nash Partnership to renovate the existing housing and build 48 exemplar new homes and community facilities to regenerate the area.

A second Nash Partnership project – Hitachi Capital Commercial Vehicle Solutions’ campus on the outskirts of Trowbridge – was highly commended in the RTPI SW Awards for Planning Excellence.

Last month the St Pauls project won the Exemplary Planning to Deliver Housing category at the RTPI’s National Awards for Planning Excellence event in London. Representatives of all the South West entries will compete at the regional awards ceremony at Cheltenham’s Pittville Pump Rooms – a stone’s throw from St Pauls – on July 23.

Nash Partnership urban design director Amanda Taylor, who designed the St Pauls scheme, said: “We are delighted that the St Pauls project has received this award in recognition of its regional importance.

“Key to the project’s success was the involvement of the local community, so this regional win is a just reward for everyone who played a part in bringing about the effective regeneration of this area.”

Cheltenham Borough Council director of environmental and regulatory services, Mike Redman, said: "We are obviously delighted to have won yet another award for the St Pauls regeneration project.

“The scheme deserves recognition for its ground-breaking achievements and these awards recognise the huge contribution of our planning team, the St Pauls community and our delivery partners, with Cheltenham Borough Homes and Nash Partnership worthy of special mention, who have all worked so effectively together to deliver this outstanding scheme. The benefits to the St Pauls community will be felt for generations to come.”

Council chief executive Paul Stephenson added: “After recently winning the national RTPI Planning Excellence award, to go on to win a regional award and receive recognition that the St Pauls regeneration is the best in the South West is fantastic news for all those involved who created this successful development.

“Many years were spent planning with the local community and partners to create this regeneration which has had a big impact for residents. It was their vital input that shaped the final designs and created a community where people are proud to live in now and in the future.”

The annual RTPI Awards for Excellence highlight exceptional examples of planning and celebrate the contribution that planners and planning make to society, inspiring others to achieve the same high standards. Shortlisted projects have been recognised for their national contribution to planning and demonstrate how significant schemes can be delivered speedily through the planning and other consents systems.
