UK hotel group Apex Hotels is to build Bath’s largest hotel after securing a £29m funding package from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

The £35m, 177-bedroom Apex City of Bath on James Street West will include a swimming pool, gym, and conference and meeting facilities with a 420-person capacity.

Due to open in the summer of 2017, the four-floor hotel will also create around 120 full-time jobs, including in front-of-house, kitchen and housekeeping roles.

Edinburgh-based Apex operates nine hotels in Scotland and London. Apex City of Bath will be its first venture in England outside the capital.

The firm, established in 1996, has a turnover of £57.2m.

Chairman Ian Springford said: “The new hotel in Bath is an exciting opportunity for the group and we’re proud to have secured a great location in a booming city. With the new development, we’ll be able to offer a new contemporary hotel to the people of Bath, ideal for both tourists and professionals travelling to the city.

“Following a strong financial performance, our expansion marks the company’s 20th anniversary with a new venture that supports our long-term visions of growth.”

Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking relationship director Alistair Macpherson said: “Apex Hotels has delivered strong growth in recent years thanks to its expansion into new regions. The business has a reputation for high-quality service and facilities and we’re pleased to have supported its first venture in the South West.

“We’re committed to supporting ambitious business like Apex Hotels as they expand into new markets, which will allow them to drive long-term growth.”

The Apex City of Bath is the latest in a string of new hotels for the city. Last week the owners of the city’s Abbey Hotel announced they had acquired the former Grade I listed Carfax Hotel Great Pulteney Street and will transform into a luxury boutique hotel.
