The Royal Navy has awarded specialist engineering firm SEA a five-year, £1.4m contract to support its weapon systems.

Under the contract, SEA, based at Beckington near Frome, will provide its expertise to the Navy’s magazine torpedo launch system (MTLS), the SeaGnat decoy launcher and a range of air weapons handling equipment used onboard Navy vessels.

SEA, which also has a base in Bristol, is a specialist in naval and tactical communications as well as supporting the Navy’s submarine fleet and tactical battlefield data systems.

The work will be carried out through SEA’s J+S business based in Barnstaple.

J+S designed the MTLS system in 1983 and has supported it in service ever since. It was later awarded the role of delegated design authority and support contractor for SeaGnat in 2008 and for the air weapons handling equipment in 2011. The new contract brings together support of these three systems.

The contract will also support SEA’s growing export business – over the past year it has won export contracts worth more than £20m for its torpedo launch system.

SEA managing director Steve Hill said: “I am very proud of the team at J+S. Not only will this contract enable us to continue our critical support of the Royal Navy, but it also acts as a clear indicator of how SEA is continuing to strengthen its growing export business in this area.”

SEA, part of a defence technology group Cohort, designs and manufactures systems engineering, software and electronic engineering services for government and industry.
