Specialist builder starts work on transforming historic area of Bath

Urban regeneration specialist Helm Construction has been brought in to transform an historic area of central Bath, drawing on its experience with similar sensitive sites around the region.

Helm is building a courtyard of eight three-bedroom townhouses at Walcot Yard, off Walcot Street, for Bath-based developers Kersfield.

The previous buildings on the site had lain empty for seven years since they were last used by a building materials reclamation business and before that as the Walcot Reclamation business.

Helm, based at Redwick, near Bristol, has wide experience of working on similar sensitive sites and on historic buildings.

Chief Executive Gary Sheppard said: “Bath’s artisan area has been a popular destination for years, but Walcot Yard had declined to the point where the buildings were no longer safe or economically sustainable.

“We have undertaken a number of similar high-profile regeneration projects in Bristol which have given districts a much-needed shot in the arm.

“Given the recent headlines about the excessive levels of student housing creeping in to Bath’s commercial areas, it is good to report that we will be building homes in Bath.”

Kersfield chief executive David Newton added: “The collection of eight new-build houses within our Walcot Yard gated development are surrounded by the thriving, independent shops and cafes of Walcot Street.

“Residents will enjoy the best of both worlds with the community feel of Walcot Street on their doorstep and Bath city centre a short walk away. Owing to the location and specification, we expect to see high demand from the local market including downsizers.”

As reported earlier this month by Bath Business News, construction on another part of the yard – known as the North Range – is to go ahead following the granting of a scheme drawn up by Bath planning, design and regeneration consultancy Nash Partnership for the site’s owners London & Argyll Developments.

Nash’s scheme will feature a row of three-storey terraced houses down the site using the same materials and colours that have brought character to the yard in recent decades.
