Each week Bath Business News gives a prominent member of the city’s business community the last word on its weekly e-bulletin.

This week David Goodall, corporate director for Barclays, answers our 10 questions

What was the LAST:

Film you watched? It was a wet Sunday afternoon and I was persuaded by my youngest daughter Anna to go and watch The Maze Runner. Funnily enough, it involved lots of people running around a maze! The popcorn was good though. Looking forward to The Hobbit next!

Book you read? Invisible Giants, a biography by Lindsay Levin. It’s a fascinating book concentrating on inspirational leadership and its impact on economic and social development. It sounds a bit of a heavy read but it’s not at all.  It is really thought provoking.

Music you bought or downloaded? The new version of Do They Know It’s Christmas.

Concert you went to? Jamie Cullum when he performed at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. I have had the privilege of seeing Jamie perform a couple of times now. He is such a talented musician and if anyone gets the chance to see him live, make sure you do it.  It was great to see Jamie’s mum and dad up and boogying with the audience!

Sporting event you attended? I’m not sure I should admit this but it was Gloucester v Leicester Tigers. A convincing win for Gloucester! We also went into the ballot for Wimbledon this year and struck gold by getting tickets for the men’s final. The best sporting event I have ever attended. What an amazing day.

Holiday you went on? A weekend break in North Devon with my wife and two daughters. We also decided to take Alfie, our five-month old Cocker Spaniel puppy. His specialist subject is ‘chewing’. There is nothing like walking on a beach on a wild autumnal day. It brings nature to life and certainly blows away the cobwebs. Sitting in the hot tub with the family (excluding the dog) was great. We actually had conversations as none of us were on gadgets!

Restaurant you ate in? The Ness in Shaldon, North Devon. All I can say is ‘thank you’ to Hall & Woodhouse as it was one of the few places we managed to find to cater for our diverse needs, i.e me needing gluten-free food, my wife and daughter being vegetarians plus a mad puppy in tow! We are not the easiest dinner guests!

Thing that annoyed you?  The card payment machine in Charlotte Street car park. Is it just me?

Thing that made you laugh out loud? I can’t remember what triggered it but we were having Sunday lunch last week and my daughter Grace said something that just made us all dissolve into uncontrollable laughter. It was one of those times when you just can’t stop – just when you think you are back in control, you set off again. I’m smiling as I write this!

Piece of good advice you were given? ‘Just enjoy every day’. This simple message came from my stepfather who is 95 years old and has the mind of a 30 year old. He’s seen a lot in his amazing lifetime and his wisdom and attitude are simply amazing. Thanks for everything Dad!

Bristol-born David Goodall has been corporate director for Barclays for five years and been in banking for 30. Educated in Bath, he now lives in Yatton Keynell.
