The University of Bath has jumped five places to a record high of seventh in this year’s QS ‘50 under 50’ rankings of the world’s best universities under 50 years of age.

Based on the same criteria as the prestigious QS World University Rankings – size, subject range and research intensity – the list is restricted to universities established after 1965.

It is designed to highlight universities whose performance in research and teaching are increasingly impressive given their age.

Bath is ranked number one of the European universities featured in this year’s list.

Vice-chancellor Prof Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE said: “This is great news and testament to the considerable progress we have made in recent years in raising our international profile.

“This result complements a range of other recent international rankings in which we have rightly been recognised for the research and teaching excellence we offer.

“To achieve this top 10 position as we approach our 50th year is particularly gratifying.

“As we build on our many successes over the past 50 years we look forward to celebrating our 50th and sharing our exciting vision for the future.”

The QS top 50 University Rankings is the latest in a run of success stories for the University in international league tables.

Bath had an overall position of 159th out of nearly 900 national and international universities in the QS World University Rankings 2015/2016 – a jump of 20 places on the previous year.

Meanwhile, the Leiden Ranking, which measures the scientific performance of 750 major universities worldwide, placed Bath at 179th – up from 241st last year.
