Free advice clinics for businesses with intellectual property (IP) issues are being staged by Bath law firm Withy King’s technology and media team to mark World Intellectual Property (IP) Day.

The global event, on April 26, is run by the World Intellectual Property Organisation to raise awareness of the importance of innovation and creativity in business.

The following day Withy King will be showing its support by holding a series of confidential advice clinics at its offices at Midland Bridge House, Bath.

Partner and head of its technology and media team, Jessica Bent, said: “Many businesses don’t realise they have intellectual property, let alone the value of it and how important it is to protect it.

“Businesses which identify and protect their intellectual property, whether through registration, identifying ownership or using appropriate agreements, put themselves in a very strong position because they suddenly have a valuable commodity which can be transferred, licensed, mortgaged or even sold.”

Intellectual property refers to the ideas and knowledge built up within a business, for example through its brands, graphics, written work, designs, software and inventions. There are many different ways IP can be protected, including patents, copyright and trademarks.

Businesses can find out more about the issues and locating these ‘hidden’ assets by booking a one-to-one session with one of Withy King’s IP specialists on Monday April 27 at events@withyking.co.uk
