Sherlock actor Martin Freeman is calling on Bath businesses to hunt out hilarious hats and wear them on November 4 to raise funds for St Mungo’s, the national charity which will start operating a centre in Bath providing healthcare advice and support for homeless people.

Martin is joined by TV comedian Ed Byrne in supporting St Mungo’s Woolly Hat Day. They are urging firms to make Woolly Hat Day a major fundraiser at work by holding a staff hat party, with employees donning bobble hats, berets or whatever headwear they fancy, donating £3 for the privilege.

St Mungo’s provides emergency shelter for homeless men and women, supporting them in their recovery and helping prevent rough sleeping and homelessness.

In Bath St Mungo’s will begin managing Mulberry House and Mews next month which will provide supported accommodation for 13 people with diagnosed, severe and enduring mental health problems.

The aim is to recruit volunteers locally to develop the range of activities on offer within Mulberry House and Mews, develop existing relationships with Clean Slate and Business in the Community, and establish a relationship with City of Bath College.

Residents will also be given support to recover from alcohol and substance use issues and rebuild their lives. Access to education, training and employment opportunities is also provided as well as the chance to get involved in structured, meaningful activities such as gardening and cooking.

Martin Freeman said: “Homelessness should be completely unacceptable in the UK. Show your support for homeless people and the work of St Mungo's by putting your hat on and passing it around to raise some cash for Woolly Hat Day.”
